Workshop for professionals - Iñaki Azpillaga

Transmitting the Ultima Vez language is all about the specificity of the creation process and the physical, energetic movement Wim Vandekeybus’ performances are known for.

Drawing from his experience working with Ultima Vez and based on decades of performance research into dance and theatre, Iñaki’s workshop will propose physically demanding tasks that deal with elements of corporeal, psychological, and emotional risk. These tasks will inherently challenge various limitations, inviting the participants to go beyond them. The workshop is designed to unlock the flow of living impulses within the body. Once unlocked, our attention, intention and awareness guide our work naturally.

The primary and practical focus throughout the workshop will be on the delicate meeting point between precision and organicity, awareness of space and one’s ability to react to its constituent elements and to improvise within a structure.

The overriding emphasis is focusing on developing within oneself what can be called the ‘total act’; a state wherein the performer works toward creating his or her own ‘movement as a theatrical act’ rather than as a technique.

Biography

Following an encounter with Wim Vandekeybus in the ‘90 Iñaki decides to join his company Ultima Vez in Brussels, where during three years he worked as a performer in Vandekeybus' creations. Later he also got involved as a movement assistant for different performances. Currently he combines his work as an assistant with other pedagogical occupations: he teaches workshops and gives dance classes to professionals, teachers and different target groups.

Level

The workshop is open to professional dancers. For those who are curious to discover the universe of Ultima Vez. The Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez universe bases its work on mankind confrontation, creative imaginary and athletic dynamics. A fit physical condition is recommended.
