Na de ‘mannenproductie’ In Spite of Wishing and Wanting (1999), werkt Wim Vandekeybus voor Scratching the Inner Fields voor het eerst met een uitsluitend vrouwelijke cast.
Het bijna volledig vernieuwde gezelschap bestaat uit een internationale bezetting van vijf danseressen en twee actrices. Opnieuw vormen dans, tekst en muziek inherente onderdelen van de voorstelling.
Voor het tekstmateriaal werd nauw samengewerkt met de Vlaamse schrijver Peter Verhelst, die een aantal verhalen uit de ‘sprookjesroman’ Zwellend Fruit herwerkte voor de creatie. De originele muziek werd gecomponeerd door Yves De Mey alias Eavesdropper. Voor het geluidsconcept werkte Wim Vandekeybus ten slotte samen met de Duitse geluidsontwerper Josh Martin.
